Debunking myths about the LGBTQ community that still trouble them
We have reached the month of love in 2024 but still, many forms of love are misunderstood or overlooked in our social structure. Unfortunately, individuals from LGBTQ communities still struggle to fit in because of the myths affecting their personal and professional lives. If you also believe in these myths, read on as we debunk the most prevalent myths for you.
Homosexuality is abnormal or unnatural
The first myth that goes around is questioning homosexuality and labeling it as ‘unnatural’. Well, reality is different because homosexuality is as normal as heterosexuality and it is nothing against nature.
It is just a choice
Quite possible that you think about it this way, but it's not a choice, it's natural. You or anyone can’t wake up one day and choose to be gay or lesbian. It comes by birth and gender identity is different from the sexual orientation at birth.
It is fine to call them by their old names
Maybe, it is normal for you but a bit of empathy can help. Those who struggle to find their ideal body transform themselves with the help of surgeries and adopt a new identity or pronoun that makes them the best version of themselves. It is also better to ask the person how they want to be addressed.
It’s an illness or disease
Another myth that revolves around and troubles people of this community is that being one of them is some sort of illness. Some also claim that this can be cured by the right parenting. But reality stands far because something natural is not an illness, not at all.
Gender and sex are synonyms
Our society and education system fail to teach the difference between these terms. Sex is something assigned at birth while gender is what an individual possesses after attaining a certain age.
It is the result of the internet
Ask desi parents and they will tell you that all this is the result of some web conspiracy and nothing like this existed during their time. Well, the fact is that frequent and open communication was not accessible during their time and thus more voices were suppressed.
