Nearly two decades of the Modi government, popularly termed as Modi 1.0 and Modi 2.0 is over and now comes the time for voter’s decision. Will Modi 3.0 arrive in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections? The answer lies in the choice of voters who chose BJP twice in the 2014 and 2019 elections. We are offering you a brief overview of how this tenure went and what were the prominent factors behind the remarkable victory. Also, we will have a close look at the factors that the BJP will be putting forward to continue this journey.

Factors that helped the Modi government win the 2014 general elections

BJP’s victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections gave them 272 seats out of 543 seats in the parliament. Being the first total majority win in the greatest democracy in nearly three decades, the triumph over the oldest political party, the Indian National Congress, was noteworthy. Here are the key factors behind the victory:

Hope for a better economy: Before 2014, India’s economic growth was hampered by the average percentage being 5 to 8. However, Modi’s Gujarat and its economy were on a progressive pace in comparison to other states. This hope of betterment gave the masses a good reason to cast their vote for the current government.

Fighting Corruption: Corruption is always a burning issue in the largest democracy. A lot of high-profile corruption cases came into the picture associated with the Congress-led coalition government before 2014. This was effectively used in Modi’s election campaign and he was portrayed as people’s ‘Watchman’ or ‘Chowkidar’.

Promises to the young voters: Youth in India have many hopes and aspirations about their future. Promises of education and job opportunities for sure attracted young voters hoping for betterment amid elections.

Best use of digital media: BJP’s campaign planners used digital media in the best possible way. It boosted Modi’s image and consistency across various social media platforms and helped in building connections with the masses that converted into votes. This highlighted the importance of branding and communication for winning elections in a modern democracy.

Modi’s return to power, reasons for Modi 2.0

Narendra Modi’s second inning as the Prime Minister of India after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections came with an added list of achievements. One of them was the BJP winning 303 seats and forming the government with a complete majority. What made it happen? Well, there were several reasons why India witnessed Modi 2.0. Prominent of them are as follows:

Effective Household Schemes: Modi’s second tenure came with effective schemes like sanitation and LPG. Campaigns promoting sanitation and eliminating open defecation, building more than 9 crore toilets across the rural and urban areas were effective measures. Also, the Ujjawala scheme offering free cooking gas connection to the unprivileged sections was heavily praised as an effort for the betterment of women, it is a women’s task in most Indian houses.

Addressing national security concerns: The Modi government also received appreciation for ways of handling national security concerns like never before. The Balakot Strike attacked the terror training centers of Jaish-e-Mohammad, a terror group involved in the Jammu-Srinagar highway attack killing 40 CRPF jawans in the Pulwama Attack.

Infrastructure Development: The improved network of roads and airports along with other infrastructure measures like super-fast trains were witnessed by the masses. The government’s aim of building world-class infrastructure and boosting connectivity made a highly positive impact.

Other factors that supported Modi’s second inning as the Prime Minister were his strong image as a global leader, lack of strong opposition, millennial support, and strong ties inside the party eliminating biases and conflicts.

Modi 3.0- Talking about possibilities

This election year is going to test the choice of the largest democracy in the upcoming months. Political strategists and experts have mixed opinions about PM Modi making a victory, most of them are citing the following list of reasons that can bring BJP back to power with Modi 3.0, the third tenure.

Scattered opposition: India’s political landscape still lacks a strong opposition and this can be used by the current government as a winning factor, as it happened in the last few elections. The INDIA alliance came into the picture but still has no common agenda uniting the parties like the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) did.

Welfare schemes like Jan Dhan YojanaSwatch Bharat Yojana, Beti-Bachao Beti Padhao, Mission Shakti, Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and other parallel schemes have helped transform the face of governance and have directly affected the socio-economic conditions of the beneficiaries.

Other landmark reforms and decisions like the Ram Mandir Inauguration, Abolishment of Section 370, and Ban on Triple Talaq are seen playing pivotal roles in turning things in BJP’s favor.

It would be interesting to see how things go with the current government after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, as the party targets to win more than 400 seats. The current government has also faced criticism related to minority issues, media biases, the Citizenship Amendment Act, and Farm laws leading to massive protests and the suppression of opposition voices.
