Indians need to consider public transportation
Being the most populated country on the globe with 1.43 billion people, the dependency on public transport multiplies. The country also needs it if it aims at achieving the net-zero carbon emission goals by 2070. Let us have a close look at the issues that Indian commuters face daily:
Overcrowded buses, trains, and other public transports
Overcrowding is one of the key issues for Indian commuters as more than 37% of them face this issue. Commuting becomes challenging during peak hours and it adds to the stress levels of the commuters. After all, how can we forget spending hours in long traffic jams where vehicles move like snails and nothing feels right? When was the last time you faced a similar issue?
Timing issues
Another issue that troubles Indian commuters is inconsistent timing which never goes well with their reporting times. Around 28% of Indians who took part in the survey stated being troubled by irregular timings. Do you remember being late for your urgent meeting or missing a deadline because your bus or train arrived late?
Poor maintenance
A Chennai woman sustained light injuries after she slipped through a hole in the MTC bus. This is what poor public transport maintenance may lead to. 24% of people who faced the survey also feel the same about maintenance issues.
Lack of online information
The lack of online information associated with the public transportation system also acts as a hindrance and 44% of people have the same opinion. Other key issues related to Indian commuters include lack of transparency, digital payment issues, limited accessibility, and ticketing problems.
A significant part of the Indian population depends on the public transport system to commute daily. That’s why it is important to focus on the issues of Indian commuters and have discussions paving ways for betterment. What’s your take on this?
